Why labels matter

Small label mistakes cause big problems

A label is a legal document. Inspectors check it, retailers check it, and customers with allergies rely on it. These are the mistakes we see most.

  1. An allergen hidden inside a sauce or spice mix, with no bold name and no "Contains:" line.
  2. "Made in Australia" with the wrong percentage, or the wrong words for where the food was made.
  3. Nutrition numbers worked out from the raw recipe, without the water lost in cooking.
  4. A panel rounded the wrong way, or missing the per 100 g column.
  5. A supplier changes an ingredient, and the label stays the same.

Undeclared allergens are the most common reason food is recalled in Australia (FSANZ recall statistics, 2021–2025). A recall costs far more than a label.

How it works

Seven steps, one finished label

Answer the questions in order. The label builds itself as you go.

  1. Product. Name your food and choose the pack size.

  2. Recipe. Add your ingredients and their weights. Pick each one from the FSANZ food list.

  3. Allergens. Check each ingredient against its supplier's specification.

  4. Origin. Tell us where each ingredient comes from.

  5. Details. Add your business name, address, best-before date and storage.

  6. Stars. Work out your Health Star Rating, if you want one.

  7. Check and print. Fix anything we flag, then download your label.

Nutrition panel

The numbers, worked out for you

Labelwise turns your recipe into a nutrition panel, per serve and per 100 g. It allows for the water lost in cooking, and it rounds every number the way the Food Standards Code says.

  • Nutrient values from the FSANZ Nutrition Panel Calculator data, the same data behind the free government calculator.
  • Per serve and per 100 g columns, laid out as the Code shows them.
  • Weigh your batch after cooking and the panel uses the cooked weight.
  • Energy checked against protein, fat and carbohydrate, so a typing slip gets caught.
  • Servings checked against your net quantity.

Allergens

Every allergen named, in bold

Labelwise prints allergens the way the Code requires: the plain names in bold in the ingredient list, and a "Contains:" statement beside it. You check each ingredient against its supplier's specification, and Labelwise won't print until every ingredient is checked.

Before

Ingredients: Tomatoes, Onion, Brown sugar, Red capsicum, Vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, Salt, Garlic, Smoked paprika.

The fish and barley in the Worcestershire sauce are hidden.

After

Ingredients: Tomatoes (54%), Onion, Brown sugar, Red capsicum, Vinegar, Worcestershire sauce (malt vinegar (barley), molasses, sugar, onion, anchovies (fish), tamarind, salt, garlic, spices), Salt, Garlic, Smoked paprika.

Contains: fish, gluten.

The sauce's ingredients are listed, fish and barley are in bold, and the "Contains:" statement names fish and gluten.

Labelwise suggests allergens from ingredient names. You confirm them from your supplier's specification.

Health Star Rating

Your stars, worked out with the official method

Labelwise rates your food with the same method as the official Health Star Rating Calculator, and draws the official graphic for your pack.

  • The official calculator's rules, tested against its own worked examples.
  • Fruit, vegetable, nut and legume content counted from your recipe.
  • The official graphic, ready for your artwork.

Health Star Rating may become mandatory. Food Ministers asked FSANZ to prepare a proposal in February 2026, and Ministers decide in 2027.

What this means for you

Country of origin

What "Made in Australia" means

Most packaged food sold in Australia needs a country of origin label. Labelwise works out your share of Australian ingredients by weight, gives you the wording the law allows, and draws the kangaroo mark with its bar chart.

  • The percentage, worked out from your recipe and rounded down, as the law requires.
  • Every permitted wording, so you can pick the one that fits your food.
  • The kangaroo mark and bar chart, or the boxed statement when your food needs one.
Change where the sugar or tomatoes come from and watch the mark change.

Questions

Questions we get asked

Who checks that Labelwise is right?

Before launch, we check a set of reference labels against the official government tools: the FSANZ Nutrition Panel Calculator, the official Health Star Rating Calculator and the government's country of origin labelling tool. Any difference we find is fixed and gets a test. Every rule we apply is public, with its Food Standards Code section. Labelwise is a tool that applies those rules. It is not professional advice, and you are responsible for your label. If you want a professional opinion, you can ask a food technologist of your own to check it.

Am I still responsible for my label?

Yes. Labelwise works out the label from what you tell it and shows the rule behind each line. You confirm your ingredients, their allergens and where they come from, and you are responsible for the label you print.

Can I use Labelwise for food sold in New Zealand?

Not yet. Labelwise is for food sold in Australia. New Zealand shares the Food Standards Code, but it has its own country of origin, trade measurement and consumer laws, which Labelwise doesn't cover. Ingredients from New Zealand are fine.

What happens when the Food Standards Code changes?

We check the Code and the country of origin Information Standard for changes, and record the date we last checked each one. When a rule changes, we update it. Your labels are kept, so you can open them and download them again for free.

Is Health Star Rating going to be mandatory?

It may be. In February 2026, Food Ministers asked FSANZ to prepare a proposal to make it mandatory. Consultation on the draft changes closes on 23 December 2026. Ministers decide in 2027, and businesses will then have time to change over. Labelwise can work out your rating now.

Is the country of origin mark the Australian Made logo?

No. The kangaroo in a triangle with a bar chart is the standard mark from the Country of Origin Food Labelling Information Standard 2016. It is free to use, and most packaged food made in Australia must show it. The green and gold Australian Made logo is a separate trade mark owned by the Australian Made Campaign. You need your own licence to use it. Labelwise draws the standard mark and never draws the Australian Made logo.

Can I get a refund?

A single label can be refunded within 7 days if you haven't downloaded it. You can cancel a plan at any time, and it stops at the end of the period you've paid for. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law still apply.

Where is my data stored?

In Australia. Payments are the one exception: they go through Stripe. We delete your data if you ask us to.
